Do you feel anxious about having an online presence? Wherever I look, people are more than happy to post their faces, or God forbid, the faces of their children for the world to see. Meanwhile I feel dread the possibility of having a picture being taken with me in it, knowing that it will probably be uploaded online for anybody to access, and even if no one were to see it, it will be scraped by companies to train their AI. I can't wrap my head around as to why everyone is more than happy to do this. Every profile you have is a possible attack surface, every paper trail is another lead if you piss off the wrong person. Hello, For over a year, I've been experimenting with methods to perform image search. I experimented with embeddings, image descriptions, OCR, image hashes, and color profiles - lots of stuff. I spent a significant amount of time benchmarking these processes, evaluating whether it could scale to the order of 1e6 images hosted on a personal computer. Textboard/Imageboard development hell

Im stuck trying to develop a way to display featured threads on the index of my site for my imageboard backend. The only method i can think of that doesn't involve a clusterfuck of code is to query the database for every top post anytime a user logs into the index, but that still sounds awfully inefficient considering how minimal of a detail it ends up being. Any tips for this sort of stuff? I tried to look at how vichan does it but i didn't really get it tbhdesu.

Silly question for a stupid build of mine. I have a very small chassis (Optiplex 990, 2011 sff workstation) which I have crammed modern itx hardware in, and 4 HDDs (2x3.5", 2x2.5"). It has ~3-400W continuous power draw, depending on what it's doing. The airflow is really bad in this chassis. The drives and the mobo take up the entire top, with no room for any fans larger than 40mm. No side fan mounting options either. The bottom has room for one 80mm. I have a big 80x40 fan (server salvage) and some 40x30s. Right now, the 40x30s are feeding the CPU's air cooler. There's small holes in the ducting to blow air at the VRM heatsink. No significant cooling for the drives yet. GPU and PSU get ample cooling, since they're in the path of the 80mm. Currently, all fans are in intake. I know that's what some servers do, force air in to compensate for poor paths. I can do this to some extent, but at over 20-30%, these fans are too loud to be in the same room as. Currently working on adding ducts to get more of the air from that single big fan to the rest of the components. Thinking of adding foam to the chassis as well. I know this won't reduce the noise much, but hopefully it should lower the pitch a bit? Anyone done anything like this, any tips to share? I know it's an outrageously stupid thing, I have and can build a significantly better chassis, or add holes to it to mount a lot more fan, but I'm quite fond of this one and I like doing silly things.

NAS Docker Setup

https://github.com/victorvde/jpeg2png There's this rather obscure tool on github from a decade ago called "jpeg2png" that's designed to remove jpeg artifacts. I've been using it for a decade now and nothing else even comes close to it in terms of quality. Even those expensive neural network based ones are considerably less effective than this tool. The only real flaw of it is that some images that actually do contain significant noise and are saved at low quality get smoothed out slightly. Understand though that importantly, that this is not smoothing in the sense of blurring, but reduction of the JPEG coefficients. In general, this tool does not result in any blurring. I believe the tool works by tweaking the DCT coefficients to result in the minimum noise and maximum coherence, which usually results in a result very close to the original. The reason the smoothing happens for high noise images is presumably because it is because the solution it finds is just to tweak every DCT coefficient so it is slightly smaller to minimize the cost. I wonder if this issue could be simply fixed by detecting when most DCT coefficients decrease, and not changing them in that case. In cases where they are legitimately being decreased, the reduction in cost would be significantly higher and the changes in DCT coefficient should be pretty much evenly spread, as the errors were introduced by quantization/rounding, which is not biased.

P2P Messaging Programs

Have you tried any Peer to Peer E2EE messaging program? Some examples would include Briar, Cwtch and OnionShare. Routers, Switches, and Hubs

Came home today to my router was a very very hot, very dead, brick. Not sure what happened, but I assume it is due to me living in a house with ancient wiring (some of the oldest parts are knob & tube, and I am afraid of ever touching that lest I awaken demons). Now I am stuck with the ISP router until I replace it. I've rather liked MikroTik products in the past, and I'm eyeballing the L009. Anyone here use it before? Any ideas for an SFP-RJ45 module that will work at 2.5Gb with it? I'm also open to other ideas for routers, and other networking gear. I just don't want Gaymer bullshit, or built in wifi.

Making the computer *yours*

People tend towards ricing their desktops, but this is really just visual stuff. What kind of touches do you have to make the computer an extension of yourself rather than collections of other peoples software? I personally set the login PAM auth settings to have rootok as sufficient. getty logins run from uid 1 so you don't have to put in a password. Unprivileged users (including ssh) can't login without the rest of the authentication modules. Having a file that gets printed whenever a shell starts as a motd is pretty useful too.

SteamOS 3.0

are any of you planning on trying SteamOS 3.0 once it gets an official release? Valve has been putting a lot of work in improving Linux usability so i'm very interested in seeing the viability of switching to Linux full-time once an official release drops. as an nvidia user, i'm especially interested in their in-house wayland compositor. i have a history of using Linux on other devices, particularly Linux Mint, but always end up going back to Windows on my main PC due to nuisances. doesn't help that i have an nvidia card. what about you? will you give it a try? are you interested in the project or do you not care?

what hypervisor should i use?

i know of Xen, Bhyve (which is like a vmm but with a hypervisor too, but its kinda less capable), or KVM (i don't really like GNU/Linux but ill get over it eventually i guess, im in a love hate relationship rn because distro fragmentation kinda sucks a lot) Xen apparently may or may not work on my current hardware, unfortunately, and i also don't know if ill even benefit from it anyways, since i really don't have a problem with running a host, its 2024, i have enough computational resources for having a resource intense host i would also say NetBSD Virtual Machine Manager is an option but i can't run NetBSD on most of my hardware as a host, and nested virtualization is not really possible on FreeBSD Bhyve iirc, and id rather not do a QEMU/KVM setup just to run NetBSD, it would be really heavy and sluggish for the most part, but idrk plan 9 also has a virtual machine system, but i don't really have a reason to start a 9fs grid since im broke af and can't buy a bunch of machines, so yeah, idk Hyper-V might be fine, im not opposed to Windows at all, but its gonna take a bit to learn how to use Windows. Solaris 11 is also an option but id rather not depend on having an Oracle account, even if its "free", however if its virtualization is actually good i might just use Solaris as my host, especially since it still supports SPARC (i plan on buying a SPARC machine)
