What kind of touches do you have to make the computer an extension of yourself rather than collections of other peoples software? I personally set the login PAM auth settings to have rootok as sufficient. getty logins run from uid 1 so you don't have to put in a password. Unprivileged users (including ssh) can't login without the rest of the authentication modules. Having a file that gets printed whenever a shell starts as a motd is pretty useful too.

C and Unix are the bread and butter of computing. Install a Linux or Unix operating system in Virtualbox, preferably a Debian disto (Linux Mint is a good choice) or FreeBSD (GhostBSD is good for absolute beginners). Don't jump into something like Gentoo, OpenBSD or Arch too soon. Then go through this book: https://www.linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php Just make sure you have a copy of your OS' manual as a handy reference. Once you've done that, pick the Scheme dialect of Lisp or C. Scheme is easier to learn and will teach you a lot about computing whereas C is hard but used in literally everything and you will have to learn it at some point. Which you do first is up to you. Lisp is a great choice for any beginner. The first computer I had to myself was an upper-low-end custom-built my stepdad made for me. I don't know much about it except how it ran Windows 7 (or maybe 8.x at some point) and we upgraded it to Windows 10 in 2016.

The family PC was a beige computer running Windows XP. Parents say it was a Compaq Presario (likely picrel). Then around 2005 maybe we upgraded to what looked like a Dell Dimension 3000. We had it for years. Sometime down the road the family installed Windows Vista, I can't remember if it was on the same Dell or if we had another new computer at that point but we switched to Windows 7 around 2010. I probably remember the Dell so vividly because we had it for so long. I only remember that Compaq Presario as "the beige computer" since it was so long ago in my formative years.

What's the best client for torrenting? I've used things like qbittorrent before but I want to know if there's something better.
Qbittorent is just a front-end for libtorrent and libtorrent is pretty much the best one out there in terms of performance. Qbittorent is a bit laggy though especially when you seed hundreds of torrents so i use rutorrent and run it as a daemon but it's pretty much the same thing so don't bother if you don't have a seedbox. But yeah what defines "the best" torrent client? the elitists from private trackers agreed that the best one is libtorrent and it's frontends ages ago nothing new came out besides maybe transmission but it's kinda duct taped together in a hurry btpd is pretty good if you are autistic and minimalistic

Did you solve the problem? The best thing is to reinstall Windows, but failing that you can try to get rid of it with different freeware anti-viruses e.g. Malwarebytes. It's probably not a full-blown virus, but adware/PUPs can be pretty bad.
