I hate DDLC, the creator is literally a tr(...) who hates otaku culture, and he made this shitty dishonest VN to mock it. The only reason why this piece of shit got so popular is because of those soy face youtubers and streamers who play the shittiest indie "horror" "games" for some attention and ad/donation shekels. A better western VN is Katawa Shoujo. While it has some issues, it's a much more genuine work that tries to capture the soul of Japanese VNs.

Most of the time during the first act are shallow, you only get to know little about these people during that time, it's so little that made it forgettable thanks for their lack of quirks. Which funnily enough, their bastardized version was the only thing their known for. This act has zero foreshadowing outside of the infamous suicide scene, which even then it's so minimal because of reasons above that lost tension for seconds. And still is a nothingburger in the second act of this game. Their "secret" issues are non-existent because, again, we meet little about them outside of Sayori's in the end. It's all for the sake of shock value, and by that, it came up as insincere. Yuri's madness to Natsuki's daddy issues, Dan wanted the audience to BAAAWWW at these characters while at the same time subvert expectations by delaying a act. Failed miserably due to that does not how it works when it comes to writing. It's why you have edgy memes in the first place, because the game does a awful job at giving characters sad backstories. It made it null when it turns out to be all bullshit created by the main antagonist. Monika has no personality, nothing to get to outside of "I'm mad and I did this so that you could notice me!!", she's a generic yandere and her entire motivation is retarded. Could had made it a bit interesting if she was a dating choice as well. In fact, this game should have real routes between girls instead of two endings, one that is powerhungry while the other is the author self-inserting himself. Having different routes and endings between girls while having this gross meta would make it a fun ride at the very least. This game (alongside with Plus) shows that Dan doesn't know how to make a story, despite claiming to. And the very fact alone is why we won't get a sequel, "Project Libitina" or whatever the fuck it is. Because that would fuck it up more than he already did. There are a lot of good games that does it's deconstruction of a certain thing like a genre or a trope infinitely better, but DDLC isn't one of them.

Its a mess of ideas that don't mesh well together. I really hated the shittily contrived 4th-wall breaking sonic.exe-esque creepypasta that took me out of the story as soon as the glitches and shit happened. Haven't read the DDLC+ side stories though, maybe its a lot better than the last.
