Whether it's Welcome to the N.H.K., .hack//SIGN, or something new like My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, the MMO they play is always the same. It's medieval, comfy, and you can go on dungeons with your clan. When I look at MMO's that exist today, I see things like Black Desert or OSRS and such. I can't find anything comfy like in anime. I know WoW is a close contender, but I mean something eastern that isn't FF14. Do they even exist?

>>1873 >>1876 yeah welcome to the NHK also clearly references FF11. it was all the rage in japan back then. i never played it though i can't say how good it is. i think they closed the servers for new characters recently but i wouldn't even play it since i don't use windows and square obviously shut off PS2 support

What makes it even more immersive for me is that you barely see any character interactions outside of The World. It's like a double layer of escapism. You're focused on exploring an imaginary world within an imaginary world. The characters' behavior somehow manages to not ruin this magic. The only windows into "reality" are the news portal and email. I don't know if any of the existing MMOs are capable of offering the same experience though.

>>1873 unfortunately that doesn't exist irl, all the old classic mmorpg were very toxic grindfests. as the others say, those are idealized references to either ff11 or ff14 because those were/are the popular mmorpg in japan. if there is an isometric perspective, it's probably a reference to mu online, mabinogi, dofus, or one of the many, many smaller games that were the same. this is hard to explain because there isn't a modern equivalent, but the point of those games was grinding (mechanically following a spreadsheet or flowchart), there was little to no skill involved, games like that aren't mainstream anymore I don't want to be too negative, but you didn't want to be there, you didn't want to be the person sitting and mindlessly grinding mu or maplestory after school/work. just like how nowadays you don't want to be the person that spends all their waking day on tiktok. this is an unpopular opinion, but modern mmo like tarkov, arc raiders, marvel rivals, lol, or fortnite beat the shit out of the mmorpg of old, because they actually involve skill and have friendlier communities anyway, to answer your question, I think mabinogi still has fan-hosted servers, and maybe lineage or lineage 2. but anyone still grinding on a fan-made server 20 years after the fact is bound to be... not an anime character, to put it lightly
