I'm currently living in Japan Do you have any questions/requests for a fellow japanon /jp/?
>>
Do subtitles spawn in front of you when you talk to people? (sorry ) How are the living conditions? Is there really obscure-flavored snacks?
>>
Would I fail the schools if a dumb dumb American like me attended them?
>>
what's the popular music people mostly listen to there? is it very different from US and other regions? why is prons very censored?
>>
c1n you post a pic with timestamp to prove it please (outside of your window would be good)
>>
>>66 >Do subtitles spawn in front of you when you talk to people? I wished >How are the living conditions? Not bad. Mostly everything is fairly priced and readily available, except fresh food, such as meat, vegetables and fruit Imported goods can get quite expensive as well Anyhow, I managed to get a quite spacious and well located apartment, so that was nice >Is there really obscure-flavored snacks? The most popular snacks have weird flavors for me, such as potato chips with seaweed or dried squid One thing I was expecting to see were weird Coca-Cola flavors, but they only have the regular, Diet and Zero Although, there is a huge variety of Kit-Kat's Also, grape is a very popular flavor for drinks and candies >>67 I only attended Japanese language school, and whilst intensive, it was really not hard. Lots of fun actually! >>68 I guess j-pop and k-pop are the most popular music genres, or upbeat techno if you're into anime and such I'm not sure about any particular artists, as the ones I enjoy are not so mainstream Fortunately, to my pleasure, Japan has a very strong underground scene, with many small venues blasting punk rock bands As for pron, I'm only aware they censor le penis and le vagen. As to why, I don't know, but it's really common to see sexual related stuff in the streets and stores. In Don Quijote, the sexual toys are right next to the normal ones
>>
>>70 can you fullfill my request, I want to see photos of japan
>>
>>70 >One thing I was expecting to see were weird Coca-Cola flavors, but they only have the regular, Diet and Zero They have the cherry, vanilla ones as well I assume right? Was really hoping they'd have weird flavors for those them as well though >Also, grape is a very popular flavor for drinks and candies I hate grapes... yuk >I only attended Japanese language school, and whilst intensive, it was really not hard. Lots of fun actually! That's surprising lol I heard a lot about it being very hard.. >Fortunately, to my pleasure, Japan has a very strong underground scene, with many small venues blasting punk rock bands I heard about this, I'm hoping to get into Japanese punk rock myself >pron Lol that's pretty funny though that they censore pen and vegan, but also have some interesting fetishes (tentacle hentai and stuff) ...not that I'm complaining Thank you japanon for your insight on Japan!
>>
Hope you don't mind if I add another one What are some underrated/hidden gems in Japan you'd recommend visiting?
>>
>>69 >>71 Now I'm traveling, so it's not so convenient, but will do so towards the end of the week! >>73 I have a huge list of places that I find interesting, so it's hard for me to pick my recommendations, at least without narrowing it down I mostly follow Atlas Obscura, Kanpai Japan Sightseeing Map and Instagram profiles
>>
>>74 thank you very much, you are the kind of people I wanted to interact with. that is present to talk about japan and will gladly answer questions P.S: Im waiting for your photos
>>
do you have some tips for japan? what are the niche places to go? any comfy place or hidden places in japan?
>>
Have you dated in Japan? What was it like?
>>
Is anime, manga, etc actually popular (and not shunned) there? Also, how rare is it to see niggers?
>>
>>69 Pic rel >>247 Dated? Not really. I had a one-night stand with a girl and another girl hit on me once at a club. That's pretty much it, and even so, both girls were foreigners either way Japanese girls are difficult to approach, and then there's the language barrier My work environment also didn't help me to meet many people and I don't like to go out and party, which is where you'd find the most girls looking for foreigners >>266 >Is anime, manga, etc actually popular (and not shunned) there? I mean, yeah, you see it pretty much everywhere and even public signs or companies use anime-style characters It's has much part of their normal lives and culture as cartoon and comics characters are for the Western world (like Batman and Super-man for Americans, or Astérix and Tintin for the Europeans) You can find anime merchandise in pretty much any place, even small villages, especially if they are the inspiration for an anime setting, like Shirakawa-go for Higurashi or Hakone for Evangelion That being said, of course not everyone watches anime regularly, buys merchandise, takes part in otaku events, ... but I'd say that everyone has watched (or at least knows) a popular anime, like Dragon Ball or a Studio Ghibli movie >Also, how rare is it to see niggers? Very very rare, but it's rare to see foreign people in general There are some spots in Tokyo where you'd see more black people tho, mainly working for bars or night clubs, but even so, I could count them with my fingers
>>
>>76 >do you have some tips for japan? If you come as tourist, there are many privileges you should take opportunity of, such as getting tax-free purchases or a discount rail pass If you come as a long-term resident my advice is to try to visit everything that otherwise you wouldn't be able to as a tourist. If you come for a year for example, then trying to enjoy the kind of events you can only experience in a certain season, like hanami in Spring, or snowboarding in Winter Some websites I can recommend are: https://tokyocheapo.com/ - Events happening in Tokyo area, information about each area and general guides https://www.japan-guide.com/ - Guides for different destinations, points of interest and trip planning tools And as mentioned in >>74: https://www.kanpai-japan.com/ - A wide variety of information as well as an interactive touristic map https://www.atlasobscura.com/things-to-do/japan - Unusual places to visit >what are the niche places to go? any comfy place or hidden places in japan? There are way more than I could ever enumerate, so I'll posting some of the ones that come to mind in following replies
>>
>>324 >>325 I'm happy you answered! I saved your picture of viewing of japan, so cool with the he calendar and todays date! I got it, we don't see as much black people as I thought but what about asian people (other then japanese) and arab people/muslims? I don't want to come across them either.
>>
>>326 and latinos and white people too
>>
>>327 I mean I just want to know
>>
>>326 I printed the calendar at FamilyMart and they had a feature in the printer to print an image as a calendar, with many different designs to choose from. I was so impressed At first I was only going to print an image of Hikari-san, but this was much better As for the foreign people, I guess Asian foreigners are pretty common, especially Taiwanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and South Korean people, although I cannot always tell just from looking Apart from that, Americans and Europeans are the most common kind of foreigners I'd say, but mostly tourists, not permanent residents Arab people/Muslims are pretty much non-existent (unless you count Indonesians as Muslim) as well as Indian people There's a great community of Peruvian and Brazilian people, but it's in specific regions of Japan, not so wide-spread Either way, 95% of the time you'll be seeing Japanese people, so don't stress it It's one of the most homogeneous countries world-wide, and if you go out of the big cities, even more so
>>
>>404 >>what are the niche places to go? any comfy place or hidden places in japan? There are way more than I could ever enumerate, so I'll posting some of the ones that come to mind in following replies waiting for your answer on this one
>>
are you still in japan or came back to portugal?
>>
are you still in japan?
>>
>>469 >>513 (Un)fortunately, I've already left Japan I miss it way more than I think I would At first, I was quite happy to come back to my home town, but after these two months away, I've reached the conclusion that I felt more complete there Perhaps it's just a phase of reverse culture shock, but in any case, I have very fond memories of Japan and sincerely hope I can return to Japan in the future and take my friends with me
>>
>>405 This shinto shrine, located in Kanda, has a old history and it's quite beautiful and spacious Nowadays it's mostly dedicated to technology and anime/manga industries, due to its proximity to Akihabara There are charms available to "rid your computer of virus" and they are shaped like circuits You'll also find plenty of ema tablets with anime drawings If you've watched Love Live, you'll recognize its stairs, which are the ones leading up to the shrine During Obon festivities, there is a celebration in this shrine in which they dance to the sound of anime songs The shrine is also home to a pony named "Akari", which is its sacred horse On and all, this was one of my favorite location in Tokyo and full of surprises. I always discovered something new going there
